Free qualifying sessions were devoted to the evaluation of different settings for the official session
In the qualifying laps Pigoli experienced loss of engine performance leading to a six position in the starting grid
Balzan, after obtaining the third place in the grid, was waiting for the end of the qualifying session to try to obtain the front row. In the last qualifying lap a big crash between two BMW (the car were too damaged and had to be excluded from the race) forced him to reduce the speed and the opportunity to improve the position in the grid was lost. That was indeed a shame since Balzan was able to obtain the best partial lap times in the first part of the circuit
The very quick start of the two Jaguars trying to fill the gap with the cars starting in the front row is vanished by a collision at the first turn of the circuit so the Jaguar loose some standings
In that collision the cooling system of the front left brake of Pigoli’s car is damaged with an imbalance in the braking power. The consequence of this is an abnormal and quick tyre wear with relevant repercussions on the car set-up and lap times not in line with his potential. Despite that and thanks to spectacular slides he managed to obtain the sixth place which is allowing him to retain the lead in the championship
New unlucky day for Balzan after the failure in the fuel pump in Monza, This time the problem was related to a damage caused by a little stone thrown by the other cars which broke the radiator
Despite the difficult start with collisions Balzan is quickly catching up and in a few laps is right behind the race leaders. In order to preserve car and tyres for the final fight, Balzan is now only following the race leaders fighting between themselves and waiting for the last laps. Sadly a foreign matters (likely a stone) thrown by one of the cars ahead managed to find its way throw the radiator causing in a hole with leaking cooling liquid and subsequent damage to the engine
Those unlike episodes did not allow to the S-Type R to fight for the lead in this race but despite that the team is still well into the lead with:
Pigoli leader of the Italian championship
Pigoli leader of the international championship
And the team leading the tea standings
